I’m Ella and (gulp) I’m a writer. Can you tell I’m still getting used to saying that?
In June 2014, I left behind a promising career in the public service to explore my yearning to write. Like many people I know, I was good at my job but unhappy in my life and could no longer ignore the quiet but persistent whisper that said you don’t belong here.
Since then, you know what I’ve discovered? Pursuing a creative life is exhilirating but really hard. It’s full of questions like: what do I want to contribute to the world? Is my creative work of value? Can I do this? How will this all work out? Is it time for a cup of tea yet?
Maybe you know what it’s like to bump up against these questions in the night, in the supermarket, in the car waiting for the light to turn green?
This blog is a place for me to grapple with questions like these and share resources that I’ve found valuable and I hope will help you do the work of making your creative dreams happen.
It’s also a place for me to practice putting one word in front of the other on topics that inspire, tickle, intrigue or anger me. You can expect this to include things like news, work and creativity, my writing practice, gender, violence against women, housing, books, connection/disconnection, justice, making things, self awareness, things that make no sense and ideas that matter.
I’m female and fall into the 25-35 year old demographic, so if you don’t believe in gender equality or are looking for tips on how to manage your negatively-geared investment property that you bought with earnings from a job that you secured with your free tertiary education…move along please.
I aim to write with clarity and power. But I often fail. I’m trying to write more and fail less. If you like what you read, drop me a line and let me know, I would be so, so grateful for your encouragement! If you’re a writer or creative of some other stripe and want to get in touch, share your work with me or explore the possibility of producing something together, please do! I’d love to hear your thoughts!
I live in Castlemaine, Victoria, Australia with my partner Nathan and our ginger cat Colonel Charlie Mustard. As his rank suggests, he’s in charge most of the time.
